This is my weekly progress for my music video project
Week 1
This week we started to do our research for our music video's genre, each member is researching 6 different R&B music videos, this allows us to visualize the genre conventions of R&B music videos so we can have an idea of how we are going to create our music video. We also did our preliminary research, where we researched about different music video genres. This week we also learned about media ecology and what how to apply this into real world examples which will be useful for our exams.
Problem: it was pretty difficult to find R&B music videos that are appropriate for the school, it was also difficult to find potential songs for our music videos, because better R&B songs are over the past 5 years
Solution: we continued to research more and more music videos and songs that are appropriate to use and are within the past 5 years. after some time researching we did have some options for our final song
To do: i plan to finish my research by the end of this week and finalize a song by next week.
Week 2
This week we continued our genre research, I watched and analyze different R&B music videos. my group and I also found a few options of songs to use for our final song, however we still aren't sure if we should keep R&B as our music video genre.
Problems: I originally aimed to finish 6 researches by the end of this week, but I kept delaying and procrastinating on finishing my research
Solutions: Ill try to do one research a day
To do: I need to analyze two more R&B music videos
Week 3
This week we finalized our genre research and brainstormed more ideas for our music video. As a group we also discussed more genre conventions of R&B music videos that we can apply to our music video. Our deadline for the music video research is this week, we would have to complete it as soon as possible
Problems: There were many assessments during this week making it difficult for me to manage my time to prioritize both studying for assessments and completing my research. I should've completed the research when I actually did have time.
Solutions: There wasn't an actual solution to this, and I ended up cramming studying and completing my research until I finished it.
To do: Watch more R&B music videos, identify more conventions and find more ideas of scenes for our music video
Week 4
This week we started to do our statement of intent for our music video project and we assigned each member to different tasks for the pre-production process. We also learned about persona and how different artists or public figures have their own persona portrayed on-screen and off-screen. From this lesson, our group created a presentation about persona, we chose a music artist and identified their on-screen and off-screen persona, through this research, we get to have an idea of how we are going to possibly portray our artist's persona.
Problem: during this week's project lesson one of our group member Kellie didn't attend class, so it was difficult to communicate and share our ideas with her as she is our actor for our music video. It was difficult to decide what type of style or persona suites her and whether she would want to use that persona or not.
Solution: we tried to communicate through our teams group chat and asked her what she thinks about different ideas. Although the communication wasn't direct and it took some time for her to respond, we still managed to share each others ideas for the artist's persona and assigned roles for the pre-production process.
To do: Continue completing the pre-production blog posts and finish the persona classwork slides.
Week 5
This week we started to do our lyrics, storyboard, persona classwork, location scout and risk assessment, mood board and our classwork blog post. Last week we already divided the tasks among each member to finish things quicker. Each member was working on their own task, but we always discussed and asked for each others feedback or ideas.
Problem: We were hesitant about picking a persona for our artist, initially we wanted to do an innocent girl next door persona, but our team and our actor Kellie were unsure if she would suite this persona.
Solution: Since we are planning to film in a record player cafe, we decided if we used a retro and vintage theme, maybe Kellie would be able to perform well with that persona. In the end we decided to use a down town girl persona.
To do: Finish assessing two more locations for the location scout and risk assessment.
Week 6
For the whole week we were given the time to continue our pre-production. We continued completing each task and brainstorming ideas for the scenes of the music video. We also started to do a screen test for our casting, we made the girls lip-sync to a few lines each from the song and we asked the guys to act a line from the music video.
Problem: We struggled to find candidates for our screen test as most people didn't want to be a part of it because they were shy.
Solution: Cassie and I (Kimora) went to find more candidates after school since many students were out during that time, we had to run around the school to find people willing to contribute to our screen test. At the end we managed to finish the whole song and get enough people to act out the lines.
To do: since our due date for our pre-production is next Monday, we need to complete all the pre-production tasks and input it into our blogs
Reflection: This weekly progress has helped me keep track of all the tasks I needed to complete for my music video project. It allowed me to look back at what I did each week and reflect on the problems I faced, which really reduced the chances of repeating the same mistakes. It also helped me understand how my planning and ideas developed over time, especially when it came to choosing the genre, finding a song, and completing the pre-production tasks. Some weeks were harder to recall, but I managed to remember what I did by checking my group chat, where my team and I often discussed our progress. Overall, this weekly progress was useful because it helped me stay organized and keep my work on track throughout the project.
