Classwork Editing

This blog post contains the work I did with Eileen in my lesson on how to successfully edit. My teacher filmed the footage but I edited it together. My teacher also provided the template for the blog post.

Why is continuity editing important?

Continuity editing includes making sure that items like props or costumes stay consistent from scene to scene. But the more important work lies in editing shots together in a way that leaves viewers thoroughly grounded in both time and space.

Different types of continuity edit

  • Straight cut (cut)

  • Eyeline match

  • Shot /reverse shot

  • Cutaway / Insert

*Match cut

Footage

Here is the footage that my teacher shot which utilises a variety of camera angles and movements. The scene is very simple, it involves a student standing up and leaving the classroom. A single shot here might be quite boring for the audience, by editing and combining the shots together we can make the scene feel more dynamic.

My editing process

Eileen and i used capcut to edit this video, it was our first time to edit a scene so it was a little difficult to adjust to the features of the app. Here is my first attempt with some errors, i tried to align the clips together to make a smooth cut, but i struggled to make it as smooth as i expected it to be. There was also a camera error in the recording process where the actor walked to a different direction to where we went in the next scene.

during this scene we had to make sure the actors legs were the same when the scene cut, this is to ensure that the cut between the scene had continuity editing. it took us some time to make the cut right while also making sure that one scene isnt played for too long.

this scene we had to make sure that the cut had continuity editing, we had to make sure that there were no pauses when the actor reached for the door. this was pretty difficult because we struggled to cut during the right time because it was difficult using the mouse pad.

Reflection: overall, this was a fun classwork activity. we got to try to edit different clips to make a final video with continuity editing. it made us realize that video editing is pretty hard and it takes a lot of focus and attention to detail. even though it was challenging and we didnt have enough time to finish, we learned a lot of new things about how to use different features in the editing app.
