Week 1: this week i started researching about the industry, i also learned about the distribution of different films and their genres. i also started to do my blog for 'comp 1' i started making new blog posts and researching about thriller films for this project. i missed out two lessons of this week which was about the industry, therefore i need to catch up and learn more about it.

Week 2: this week i stared my research about thriller movies. i researched about the genre conventions of thriller movies and how different thriller movies conform or subvert to the genre conventions. I also started to watch different thriller movies; their openings and trailers. I hope that by doing this research i can have a clear visualization of what my project in going to look like

Week 3: this week i continued my research about thriller film openings. I started to watch different thriller film openings and analyse the technical elements that were used. I started doing my 2 big researches and 6 small researches. my group then started to share our ideas for our film opening. we then made a general idea of what our film opening would be like.

Week 4: this week i continued and finished my research and started to learn more about synergy and how companies can benefit each other by doing that. i did a few researches in class about synergy. my group also started to do the statement of intent. we assigned the tasks from the statement of intent to each member.  we also developed our plan for our project

Week 5: this week we started to do our storyboard, we watched a video on how to make a proper storyboard for our project. the video was very helpful as it outlined the things we need to include to make a proper storyboard. firstly we made a rough draft of our storyboard, then we started to finalize our storyboard. we also started to create the script and screenplay.

Week 6: this whole week we used the lessons to continue our project, we continued our storyboard and the script and screenplay, also our class made a screen test where each one of us practiced to act out different lines. My teacher then gave me and the whole class a check list of what our blog should include. this is very helpful for me to keep track on what i need to do and finish.

Week 7: this week we continued finishing our blog posts, such as the storyboard, risk assessments, and others, my group assigned each member to do different tasks to finish things quicker

Reflection: this weekly progress has helped me recall the things i have did and learned in the past lessons, it also helps me keep track of my progress and what ive been doing the past weeks. without the weekly reflection i would have forgotten many things we did in the class.

this is my next term is school which i will start back at week 1

Week 1: this week i made a project with my group to recreate a thriller film scene, overall it was a fun and new experience, we practice on how to replicate a scene and create a storyboard from the scene.

Week 2: this week i learned about editing and continuity editing, i tried to edit with several scenes my teacher provided me with. we also learned about 4 new theories which were cultivation theory, desensitation theory, social learning theory and reception theory, we also learned about the different types of dominant reading and how different people perceive different media texts.

Week 3: this week we learned about new theories which were representation theories, Judith Butler theory, Laura Mulvey theory and Lisbet Van Zoonen theory. it was little overwhelming with all the new theories that we learned but ill try to understand them more . Me and my group finished filming this week and now we have to rearrange everything and start editing and creating blog posts about them

Week 4: this week there were no media lessons because of the Chinese New Year holiday

Week 5: This week we started doing the audience research, we made a questionnaire asking questions about our current progress, we asked problems that could be fixed

Week 6: Due to the extreme weather conditions, our school decided that our lessons should be held online. we did two lessons online and we learned about how to create our CCR. However, it was very hard to concentrate during the online classes because there are many distractions at home.

Week 7: This week we did a mock test to prepare for our exams, then we continued to do our CCR's and we started to do CCR 3 and 4, we also discussed about the processes of pre-production, production and post-productions and the hardware, software and online programmes we used for our project

Week 8: This week we checked our first mock test results, we did this so we could review our answers and see our mistakes so we can do better in the next mock, the next day we had our 2nd mock test, then we also had a project lesson to continue or missing blogs, CCR and final project

Week 9: This week we had our last mock test and for the rest of the sessions we had project lessons where we completed missing blogs and continued editing and finishing our CCR

Week 10: we had the whole week to finish our CCRs, blog posts and final product for the submission. Even though i tried to do some of the CCR weeks before, i still ended up staying up late to finish my CCR. Next time i will manage my time better to not stress out.

Reflection: by making the weekly progress, i was able to keep track of the things i did each week. this helped me stay organised and reflect on what i had done over time. it helped me to clearly see the topics we covered in class and the classworks i did in class. even though i already started to do the CCRs weeks before the deadline, i still struggled to complete them in time, this can be useful for the next project as i can manage my time better by looking back at the weekly progress.

Cassie: https://cassie-regentsmedia.blogspot.com/

Tisha: https://tisha-regentsmedia.blogspot.com/

Reflection: we've decided to make the second project in the same group, this is because we know each other the most out of everyone else in our class, we've also did our previous project together, so it would be easier for us to cooperate and work together. we experienced doing a project together so now we would know what to expect during the next project, we can learn from the past experience and make use of it in this project.

Brief

This blog post contains the brief of my project

Reflection: this brief for my project outlines the things i need to do for my film opening project. this can allow me to know what i should do for this project. it also shows the grading rubric for our project, i can then see what i should do to gain the maximum points achieve a high score

Editing

this blog post contains the editing process of our tourism ad project (the editing process was mostly done by my group members tisha and cassie but also with the help of me and eileens opinions or ideas)

Editing

Problem 1:

In the first scene we filmed, we were still getting used to filming and acting on camera. This uneasiness led us to forget how to properly transition from one shot to another. Because of the sudden cut when transitioning from one shot to the other, we decided to add two black screens to add a cool effect and blend the shots together. In this video, Cassie was shown to be sleepy and drowsy, and this black out effect somehow matches with her sleepy expression, therefore the transition works well.

Problem 2:

Turns out when we were recording one of our scenes, which is this running scene, we accidentally recorded it in slow-mo. This affected our results but we were able to change it to be normal speed by changing the speed of our video. Because of this change, you can’t even tell that the video was once in slow motion.

We were figuring out a font type that would look good in our video and this is what we agreed on that day, but we changed it again later on into a different font to match with our playful theme .

Above, Tisha decided to make the colours on all the food different so add variation and liven up our ad to stick with the “youthful” and playful theme. Cassie chose the exact colours and shades to make it stand out and not blend in with the background.

Originally, we added the prices of the food and the other items/activities in standard american dollars. However, in our first scene, we take out our wallets and pull money out. We didn’t have american dollars on hand, but we had australian dollars. We figured using australian money and converting prices to australian dollars would target australians, so that's how we changed our demographic.

1st Video Draft | 6 September 2024

https://youtu.be/HnjnQQwqXiE?si=uj2xtQoAezYugiVl

During our editing on this day, our teacher saw our video in order to check our progress and he gave comments on what we should do to make it look better. The ideas our teacher gave us to improve our advert are visualized and shown above.

2nd Video Draft | 12 September 2024

https://youtu.be/uaxhEiTkLA8

In this draft, we have yet to film the first scene or add music to our advert. Music was a big feature of our advert as we did not have a script, so we needed to choose a good song that matched our theme.

We had narrowed it down to 3 songs/instrumentals:

  1. One thing - One Direction
  2. Borderline - Tame Impala
  3. Attention 250 Remix - NewJeans

We ended up choosing and using the instrumental of One thing by One direction, as it had a calm start then built up to a fun and cheerful chorus, which was exactly what we needed.

One Direction is also a very popular band amongst teens all over the world, and we have similar target audiences. This was another reason why we chose this song.

In this part of the scene, we wanted to include a shot of the monkey and the monkey forest sign. We took a close up shot as shown in the first photo above. However, when we made the text bigger (so the viewers can see it better), the monkey got completely covered. So, we changed it to a medium-long shot, still including monkeys and the sign.

3rd Video Draft | 13 September 2024

https://youtu.be/sHwniPKOemQ

After finishing this draft, we asked opinions from our classmates on our advert. We took their suggestions and made small changes to our ad. Overall, we agreed it looked better after the changes.

Problem 3:

Via suggestions from our friend, we realised that it was quite difficult to tell that Cassie was dreaming in the video. So, our friend offered some solutions to this problem. Tisha switched the walking and firework scenes and added a longer fade after. We found that this made the video more “dream like” as it had a false ending. It was now much easier to tell that Cassie was dreaming.

Font development

(This part is copy and pasted from Cassie’s research blog)

My team and I experimented with a wide variety of fonts via the Canva App, which provided many free font options to choose from. it was convenient as Canva allowed my whole team to work on the image above at the same time. We ultimately felt like all these fonts were boring on their own, and didn’t capture the tone we wanted to convey. That’s when I thought to combine two fonts together to create a more engaging design. Here is the idea I came up with:

This font combination struck us as both aesthetically pleasing and purposeful. The top font, with its "handwritten" feel, evokes a personal and casual vibe, similar to what we would expect from a student's handwriting. This informal, playful tone gives it a sense of authenticity to our target audience of students. It is playful and approachable design creates a sense of fun and youthfulness, something we wanted to emphasize in the ad. 2 out of 4 group members preferred this font a out of the many fonts we had tried out, as it aligned with our vision of creating a friendly, relatable tone.

In contrast, the bottom font has a more sophisticated and elegant style. Its appearance conveys professionalism and a sense of  flow, which pairs well with the cultural and natural beauty of Bali. This connotation of refinement helps reinforce the idea of Bali as both an exciting and enriching destination, perfect for students looking for affordable yet memorable experiences.

Together, these two fonts create a dynamic contrast—balancing playful energy with elegance. This distinction separates the two different sections of the message but also prevents the design from feeling bland. The variation in style ensures that the ad remains visually engaging, while also reinforcing the dual message of fun, affordable experiences with a touch of uniqueness, making it appealing and memorable for the audience.

In the end, this is how our call to action and final frame of the ad looked like.

Reflection: throughout the editing process, i gave my opinions of how the editing and arrangements of scenes were, i gave suggestions and opinions about the fonts used and the placement, the transitions of scenes and the coloring / filter of the overall video

Behind the Scenes

this blog post contains the behind the scenes of our shoot

Scene 1: School

Here is a picture of us filming for the first time for our project at school. We

received our teachers permission to film this scene and he was there supervising

as well. A problem we faced when filming was that it was the only serious scene

we had, where we all had to keep a straight face. However, that was very difficult

because we (mostly Cassie, who was the main actor in this scene) couldn’t stop

laughing. In the end, we still managed to get some shots without smiling and

use them in our final video.

Scene 2: Beach Scene

On the day we filmed our beach scene, we were very unprepared. Eileen forgot her

cardigan at school which affected the character’s appearance and costume. However,

the shots still ended up looking nice and cohesive, and Eileen still looked like a tourist

going to the beach. So in hindsight it wasn’t that big of a problem.

Before we started filming, we had some food and it gave us an idea to add into our video.

It also matches the concept of our video theme which is “on a budget” because the food

(Bakso) was only around 15k Rupiah.

In this photo, we can see Tisha was looking for a good angle to shoot the video.

Figuring out how Eileen should hold the camera for the shot.

This was the behind the scenes of the beach scene, which we filmed first. There was a shot that

required the whole team in the frame, however we didn’t bring an “extra” person to be the cameraman,

as we couldn’t find any mutual friends available on that day. So, we asked this nice stranger nearby if

she could film us for a specific shot. She kindly agreed, and we got permission to take and put this photo

in our blog. However, she requested her face to be covered.

Scene 3: Monkey Forest Scene

On the day of filming for the monkey forest scene, we all were tired as we had just finished the school week.

However, we loaded up with snacks in the car and that helped to liven up our energies so we could put on a

good expression for our video.

In this video, we used a POV shot in order to make it more relatable for our audience.

Us on the way to the monkey forest!

We had some safety concerns when visiting the monkey forest. The monkeys in the monkey forest are free,

meaning they can walk anywhere they please. They’re also known to be very naughty, and they might grab

things that are out, for example the phones we were using to film. However, We always made sure that one

person served as a lookout when we were filming a scene, making sure the monkeys don't get too close. We

also didn’t film any of the monkeys' weird or aggressive behaviour, e.g a monkey eating hand sanitizer, to s

how our audience only the good sides of the forest.

Scene 4: Restaurant

We didn’t take many pictures for this scene, as we were hungry and immediately ate after filming our food.

However, here's a few pictures of the food we included in the video and us entering the restaurant.
