This blog post contains my researches about different genres
How to open a film:
Film | Genre/Genre Conventions | How did this scene introduce characters, settings and create intrigue? | What did you like/dislike about the intro? |
Extraction 2 (2023) | Action Fight, explosion, guns, crime | The movie was introduced by the hero, it was shown in the past where the hero was shot and fell from a bridge, it then flashforward to the present where his body was found. We can tell this because the movie showed an establishing shot of the new location of where the cahracter is. The character was then brought by the medical workers to get treated. | What i liked about the intro was that it showed a clip of what happened in the previous movie, this allows the audience who even did not watch the fist movie to know what the movie is about. What is disliked was that |
Pamali: the corpse village (2023) | Horror Ghosts, abandoned houses, blood, nighttime | The movie is introduced by genre, the scene starts with a loud thud of a man digging a graveyard with a shovel. The scene shown in night time and he is shown alone in the graveyard. The man was shown burying a corpse, this allows the audience to tell that the genre is horror. | What i liked about the intro was that the movie shows the genre well to the audience. What i disliked about the intro was that there was an unclear context of the film, the scene suddenly shown the man’s leg being rotten and changes to a different scene with other villagers. |
Uglies (2024) | Sci Fi Spaceship, advanced technology, aliens, | The movie was introduced by a flashback, it shows the character narrating the story, the character tells the audience about her experiences of her story. | What i liked about the movie was that. I disliked that the movie begins by |
500 days of Summer (2009) | Romance Love, couples, | The scene starts with a narration of the two main leads, the narrator introduces the two characters and tell the audience about them, they tell that they are complete opposites and have different believes. The setting is in a workplace where the two main leads first meet. | I like the clips of their childhoods and the music it was presented with, this tells tha audience about the two characters personalities and backgrounds. What is dislike is that in the beginning, the narrator gave away the plot by telling the audience about the two characters. |
Johnny English (2003) | Comedy Jokes, laughter, | The movie was introduced by a flip genre, the movie starts with the character in a suit at night wanting to rob a museum, however the genre switched when the character bumps into a fierce dog and then pulls out dog toys to distract it.. It creates a change of genre to the audience, from thinking it was a mystery or action, to a comedy. The movie also showed humorous scenes or clips to show that the movie’s genre is a comedy. | I liked that the movie gave a switch to the plot which allows the audience to feel curious of what is going to happen next. What i disliked about the intro was that |
Breaking in (2018) | Thriller | In this film, they introduce an older man in a scene that starts slow, almost like a montage showing him. The lighting is dark, giving the scene a gloomy feeling. Then, upbeat music with a low, calm voice begins as the man starts jogging. The neighbourhood is bright, which contrasts with the serious music. Suddenly, a car appears and hits the man. Then, the driver gets out of the car. | In this movie, I like how they create suspense at the beginning, giving it a mysterious feel, but then switch things up with upbeat music. I also enjoy the idea of a montage showing the old man jogging. There's a scene that highlights how cautious he is when crossing the road, only for a car to suddenly appear and hit him. |
